Lady Amethyst pointed out that Sarah essentially made a circle (well, a rectangle if you want to get technical) when she first began navigating the Labyrinth. Sarah turns to the right when she first enters. After following this straight path for ages, she sinks against the wall in frustration and meets the worm who points out the opening across from them. Entering this passage as she did, should have taken her back outside the Labyrinth. First, Sarah continues going in what had been and continues to be forward. But the worm calls her back and tells her never to go that way. She turns around and heads back in the opposite direction. She's made a right, a right, and a right - which should have taken her back outside and down eventually to the exact place where she entered the Labyrinth.
Here's my adaptation of Amethyst's ASCI art explanation:

I noticed the first half of this inconsistancy, but I didn't think the rest of it through to realize that it should have taken her to exactly where she had started. Mentally I had forgotted that she's now turned completely around. Maybe physics just don't apply in Jareth's world (hallelujah, since I can't grasp that maths/sciences rubbish). Besides, magic is far cooler...
